  • Perishables
  • Perishables

Blue Bird Logistics gives special attention to the transportation of Perishable Cargo, given the conditions of the cargo’s life cycle, which is essential to the preservation of these goods.

Perishable cargo includes: seeds, fruits, vegetables, fresh flowers, meats, fish, shellfish, and any other product that can be quickly affected by inappropriate preservation conditions.

Blue Bird Logistics and its affiliates’ investments in state-of-the-art refrigerated warehouses in the region demonstrate their commitment to the Perishable Cargo industry. In addition, Blue Bird Logistics and its affiliates have access to refrigerated warehouses at destinations where they operate, which allow the companies to provide customers their well known reliable service.

Shipments consisting of Perishable Cargo will only be accepted if the following requirements are met:

    A. Perishable Cargo (seafood, meats, etc.) must be properly packed to prevent leaks, spills or strong smells during transport.

    B. Horticultural products such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, etc. must be packed inside containers strong enough to support a stack of at least 2.2 meters (7.2 ft), without collapsing at the bottom. The packing should be resistant to the moisture that these products generate  (See note 1).

Note 1: Testing resistance of this type of packaging can be done with simulated weight at a temperature of 22 to 24° C and a relative humidity of 75 to 80%, for 24 hours with boxes piled to a height of three meters, or a weight equivalent to that stack height.

    Special Conditions

Shipments of Perishables packed with solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) require a previous agreement between the sender and Blue Bird Logistics or the operating carrier. Dry ice is classified as a Dangerous Good and the type of aircraft limits the amount that can be placed onboard.

Specific indications will not be accepted for maintaining precise temperatures or temperature ranges (e.g., “keep at 5 degrees” or “hold between 10 and 13 degrees”).

Note: Whenever you use dry ice as a refrigerant, it must be recorded. After the product name, the following legend should be incorporated: “Dry Ice 9 UN 1845 “, followed by the amount of dry ice contained in each package.

    Labeling

Perishable cargo must bear the following labels:

    A. Blue label identifies the contents as meat, fish, vegetables or fruits.

    B. Package orientation labels (direction arrows).

    C. Hazard label class 9, if using dry ice as coolant product.
